Love … It’s an interesting thing to think about at a time like this. Of course, I suppose it is the only thing to think about at a time like this, as your head is in my lap , and your tears are staining my jeans. Most people think of love as this shiny thing. The pick nick in a beautiful field on a beautiful day. The flowers are in bloom, and the breeze plays a lovely tune through the trees of the forest just behind us, but it isn’t. This is it. Us in this florescently lit hospital waiting room. It doesn’t smell like honeysuckle; it smells like lysol. The breeze is coming form the air conditioning, and there isn’t a picnic basket with sandwiches; there is a problem. Your mother just went into cardiac arrest and they are preforming an emergency double bypass surgery. Your here because you love your mother and cant stand the thought of loosing here. I’m here because I love you and when good news comes through that door I want to be here to rejoice with you; and I’m here because I love you and when bad news comes through that door I want to be sure that someone is there to put you back together again. The doctor opens the door. He calls your name. We both jump to our feet. We are holding our breath. Then…

All day I’ve been anxious and worried. I need a haircut. I woke up with a zit. Everybody else seems to look perfect. I’m swamped with homework at school. I need more things than I have the money to buy right now. I’ve been fighting with my parents, who say that everything’s my fault, and nothing I do is good enough. I’ve yet to see Perks of Being a Wallflower or the new Doctor Who episode. I haven’t had time to finish reading my book. I don’t even want to talk about my social life. Relationships are supposed to be on hold my senior year. College will be out of state, and since I don’t do long-distance very well, I’m trying to save myself the heartbreak. I’m overwhelmed, and it hasn’t seemed that great lately.

But then I spent an hour browsing Tumblr… and things have started looking up!

During the Nerd HQ “Conversations for a Cause” with Matt, Karen, and Arthur

I love this, so very very much.

Some people would say something sly and patronizing to this girl, and make all the grown-ups laugh. “Ohhh the weeping angels are sooo scary bla bla blah.” But Matt asks this young lady if she’s scared, and she’s honest, and he sees the seriousness in her - because she believes this stuff, it’s part of her universe! And he goes into that universe with her, and tells her the truth from her perspective. He doesn’t say “It’s all pretend, sweetie, there’s nothing to be scared of,” or “Those silly weeping angels can’t hurt you,” or “The Doctor’s got it covered,” or dismiss her in any way. He steps into her world, and promises her that she’ll be safe in a language that she understands.

In my opinion this is the dictionary definition of respecting someone else’s beliefs. You win, Matt. You win so damn hard.
